Man driving U-Haul leads police on two-hour chase

Authorities report that a man driving a rented U-Haul truck through Loretto Friday led police officers on a two-hour chase across the state line into Alabama, then back to Loretto before he was captured.

Officials indicate that the pursuit originated on Highway 101 when a Loretto police officer recognized the man driving the U-Haul as a person against whom they had an outstanding warrant. He turned around and pursued the truck, however he reports that the driver refused to stop.

The Loretto officer pursued the driver to the Alabama line in Lexington as he wove through various back roads, then back onto Highway 101. At the state line he relinquished the pursuit to Anderson police officers. They pursued the man along Highway 72 into Limestone County. The path he chose eventually led him back to Loretto.

Officials indicate that the man drove to his home on the 600 Block of Loretto's East Main Street. He and his female passenger then exited the vehicle and went inside of their house. Officers were able to enter the home and place both under arrest.

The couple was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where the man, identified as Bruce Gann, was booked under multiple charges including evading arrest, reckless driving, failure to yield to emergency equipment, improper lane change, failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to stop at a traffic signal, speeding, and driving on the wrong side of the roadway.
